Voodoo in the Reconstruction Period

Voodoo in the Reconstruction Period
The first pop up of the word voodoo in books is during the Reconstruction period. It shows up between the periods of 1873-1880 (as shown on ngram), and then dies down again until 1887. People began to talk about voodoo, and voodoo priestess's during this time.

Voodoo became popular (in speech not as much action) in the 1970's. There is an article in the Sugar Planter newspaper that talks about how a black woman noted herself as controlled by a voodoo priestess in Louisiana. She said she was in love and could not help it because of the spell the voodoo priestess put upon her. This news article was found on The Library of Congress, Chronicling America.
