  1. The meaning of the word philanthropy by Merriam Webster is, "goodwill by fellow members of the human race". Some activities associated with philanthropy are supporting organizations who help those in need like The American Red Cross, as well as starting non-profits that benefits the community. The difference between charity and philanthropy is that philanthropy is a long-term reliable source of help surrounded mainly by businesses, whereas charity is short-term and helps mainly emotionally as a quick response (LinkedIn).
  2. Andrew Carnegie was an industrialist in the world of steel industry, and at thirty became a very successful businessman. He sold his business, and became a philanthropist shortly afterwards. He accumulated a total givings of over three-hundred fifty million dollars. He believed in the "Gospel of Wealth," which stated that the rich people in the world had a service to give to those in need. He created two-thousand five-hundred libraries across the nation and gave more than seventy-thousand six-hundred organs to churches. He also gave around one point one-million dollars to the reconstruction of Carnegie Hall (Information from: History.com).
  3. The two mens giving compared in that both decided to be philanthropists, yet Carnegie did do much more philanthropy in his givings than Rockefeller who was following the lead of well-known Carnegie (Information from The Week).
  4. The type of philanthropic work that the Carnegie Foundation is involved with today is educational. The branch I focused on was the Carnegie Hall branch. Carnegie Hall is a concert hall, which shows that a large part of Carnegie's philanthropy was towards the arts and learning about the arts. The branches in the Carnegie Foundation are the (Information found on Larnegie: Other Carnegie Organizations), CARNEGIE COUNCIL FOR ETHICS IN INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS, CARNEGIE ENDOWMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL PEACE, CARNEGIE FOUNDATION, CARNEGIE FOUNDATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF TEACHING, CARNEGIE HALL, CARNEGIE INSTITUTION FOR SCIENCE, CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY, CARNEGIE MUSEUMS OF PITTSBURGH, THE CARNEGIE TRUST FOR THE UNIVERSITIES OF SCOTLAND, THE CARNEGIE UK TRUST, CARNEGIE HERO FUND COMMISSION (US), CARNEGIES BELØNNINGSFOND FOR HELTEMOD (DENMARK), FONDATION CARNEGIE (FRANCE), STICHTING CARNEGIE HELDENFONDS (THE NETHERLANDS), CARNEGIE HELTEFOND FOR NORGE (NORWAY), CARNEGIESTIFTELSEN (SWEDEN), THE CARNEGIE RESCUERS FOUNDATION (SWITZERLAND), THE CARNEGIE HERO FUND TRUST (UK), CARNEGIE DUNFERMLINE TRUST, AND THE FONDAZIONE CARNEGIE PER GLI ATTI DE EROISMO (ITALY)
  5. Current major philanthropists are Chuck Feeney and Jon Huntsman Sr. (Information from Forbes). I chose to focus on Chuck Feeney. He started Atlantic Philanthropies which is a business that is focused around philanthropy.
  6. As a philanthropist I would choose to donate to things such as music festivals around the United States. I believe they are good ways to acknowledge rising artists, as well as expose current humans to music and fun.
